Safeguarding code of conduct - Parents/Responsible Adults

Snowsport England and The Lake District Ski Club expect the highest standards from all young people and their families participating in snowsport with us.

Note: We are situated in a remote high mountain environment, often subject to extreme and rapidly-changing weather conditions which can require good navigation skills as well as skiing experience. Our unmarked runs are un-groomed with highly variable snow and unmarked hazards. Therefore we cannot allow unaccompanied minors (under 18s).

Parents/Responsible adults will:

• Ensure both they and their child are sufficiently prepared, competent and fit to deal with the conditions outlined above, including the climb to and from the tow (especially if carrying skis and boots)

• Ensure their child is properly attired for mountain weather conditions, including helmet and gloves, which must be worn whenever skiing

• Not place their child under pressure or push them into activities they do not want to do

• Acknowledge they are responsible for their child at all times

• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person within the context of snowsports

• Not use inappropriate language or gestures, including foul, sexist, abusive, racist or prejudicial language or tolerate it from other members or guests

• Not condone, or allow to go unchallenged, any form of discrimination if witnessed

• Positively reinforce their child

• Encourage their child to abide by the FIS code of conduct for safety on the slopes

• Be realistic and supportive

• Ensure their child’s hygiene and nutritional needs are met

Parents/Responsible adults have the right to:

• Know their child is safe

• Be informed of problems or concerns relating to their children

• Be informed if their child is injured

• Contribute to decisions within the club

• Be told who the Club Welfare Officer is

Any breach of this code of conduct will be addressed immediately by the Child Welfare Officer or the Ski Tow Officer.
